How to check kidney condition what’s best testing

1. Blood Tests

These measure kidney function by checking how well your kidneys filter waste.

  • Serum Creatinine
    • Measures creatinine level in blood.
    • Normal range:
      • Men: ~0.7–1.3 mg/dL
      • Women: ~0.6–1.1 mg/dL
    • High value → kidney function may be reduced.
  • eGFR (Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate)
    • Calculated from creatinine, age, gender.
    • Normal: >90 mL/min/1.73m²
    • <60 for 3+ months = Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD).
  • BUN (Blood Urea Nitrogen)
    • Normal: 7–20 mg/dL.
    • High → kidney issues or dehydration.

2. Urine Tests

  • Urinalysis
    • Checks protein, glucose, blood, infection.
  • Urine Albumin-to-Creatinine Ratio (ACR)
    • Detects early kidney damage (microalbuminuria).
    • Normal: <30 mg/g.

3. Imaging Tests

  • Ultrasound (Ultrasound Whole Abdomen (USG Whole Abdomen)or CT scan
    • Looks for structural problems like blockages, stones, or size changes.

4. Advanced Tests (if needed)

  • Cystatin C test (alternative to creatinine for GFR).
  • Kidney biopsy (only if severe issues suspected).

Best Screening Combo

✔ Serum Creatinine + eGFR
✔ Urine ACR
✔ Ultrasound (if chronic issues or abnormalities found)
